Some updates!

We’re nearing the finish line on our latest project, which means lots of little things getting taken care of, and finishing touches going on. This past weekend we actually treated ourselves to a night off to attend the annual block party on our old street- where our first house is. We had a blast hanging out with everyone- it definitely made us feel nostalgic and miss our old place, and the wonderful neighborhood.  We were a little worried when some nasty weather came through that afternoon, but it cleared up just in time! 2nd Floor Main Bath

Main Bath Before/After

You guys.  We are totally getting there! We’re in that oh-my-gosh, how-is-this-thing-not-done-yet stage of things, and we’re both starting to go a little crazy in the head.  We seem to reach a point of almost-done-ness where things start coming together, the house actually starts looking like a real house that a real person could actually live in, and we start noticing every.

little.

thing. Continue reading

DIY Cast-Iron Tub Makeover

how to refinish an old cast iron claw foot tub

The main floor bath is just about ready to be revealed (so exciting!), but I wanted to take a little time-out to highlight the tub you’ll be seeing in there!

I felt like this tub deserved it’s own post, and a little how-to, since it required a little sprucing up.

When we bought the house, there were all kinds of things in there! Molding from doorways, old doors and windows, an old dresser (which we have some as-yet-undetermined plans for!) and…. this strange old tub. Continue reading

Family Room

before/after

We’re starting to make some headway, and putting the finishing touches on each room.  The house is on a really great street, which recently held their annual block party.   Since things were starting to take shape, our realtor decided it would be worth opening the doors for a little “preview” of the house to try to generate some interest, and let the neighbors see what we’ve been up to all this time!  We figured we’d set things up a little, and we finally had to settle the debate of how to set-up the room that is open to the kitchen.  Continue reading

Under-Stair Bath

To help motivate ourselves after our plumbing setbacks, we decided to get at least one room finished, so naturally we picked the tiniest one! We’re all about the small victories right now. 🙂  I’m so happy with the way this little powder room turned out, and it definitely helped us see the light at the end of this renovation tunnel!

We added this powder room mostly out of necessity, as both of the full baths are on the second story.  We felt it was important to have an accessible bath on the first floor both for convenience and so guests don’t have to go upstairs to the bedroom level.

The first step was finding the space.  Continue reading

And then there’s this….

So this post is a little late because I realized: taxes.  My computer and my free time has been dedicated to the monstrous task of trying to organize our income and expense for all sorts of craziness, that I haven’t had much time to spare.  I’m still not quite finished, but it’s time to give the old blog a little love.  Aside from tax excitement, it’s been an eventful month!  First we had some good friends in town for some early Mardi Gras festivities.  Then my family came to visit the following week, and we all were able to experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans for the first time.  We had a blast!

After everyone went back to the Wintry Northeast (they just broke the record for snowiest winter! um, congrats?), it was time for Mike and I to get back to work! Continue reading

A little teaser…

Y’all, I’ve been so busy with friends and family in town and Mardi Gras-ing, that I haven’t had any time to spare to post!  The fam is in town until the weekend and we’ll be busy showing them the sights! I don’t want to leave you totally hanging, though, so here’s a sneak peak at what we’ve been up to, and what I have planned for my next post!

We’re on to… house three!

Hi! I didn’t get a chance to write a post this past weekend, because I was busy watching the Patriots win the Superbowl! Hooray!  It was such a good game, and we had a fun time watching with lots of people who really only cared about their pool numbers and/or gatorade bets!  We had a good natured Seahawks “fan”- he had bet against a buddy (who was also there) on the outcome.  Even the New Yorker rooted for the Pats (he knows what’s good for him 😉 ). I also had some things to do to get ready for Mardi Gras festivities- I may have woken up with sequins stuck to me this morning.  Yes,  it’s only Wednesday!  Continue reading

Our first house

DSCN1987

Keeping with the home tour theme, we’re going to take it back a bit to our very first house, which was also the recipient of our first attempts at DIYing (oh, how far we’ve come!). I’ve learned a whole lot since taking on these first projects, and will hopefully continue to learn more tips and tricks to get things done a little bit, ahem, better… and more quickly/easily!  We’ll also see just how many messy house and puppy cameo pictures we can pack into one post (eek! note to self: re-stage and take better pics one day!!).

We love our adorable little 1920s bungalow, and it’s in an absolutely wonderful neighborhood, with great neighbors and a fantastic community association.  We really loved it there, so when the time came to move closer to our respective jobs, it was hard to let go, and the decision to keep the house and rent it out was an easy one.  2 years later, we’re SO glad we made that decision.  Continue reading
